Black Lives in Georgian Britain
On Saturday 17th October, come to Apsley House, London for a day of Black History in the Georgian-y era (1770-1840), focused mainly, but not entirely on lives in Britain; we have an arrange of incredible speakers:
Claire Linney - the wonderful children's history author is coming to speak of one of her favourite Black British personalities.
Liberty Collard AFHEA FRSA - the excellent Georgian Black London researcher will tell us the life stories of various Black Britons that she has reconstructed through her research.
Danny Thompson - the ever-active artist & historian will tell the essential history of Haiti & the new nation's struggles with the various warring European Empires, including Britain.
Dr Isaac Crichlow - brilliant Isaac will be speaking about how Black soldiers of the West India Regiments - bought from slavers and put into uniform - navigated their new status as soldiers to challenge the dual yokes of racism and military discipline.
Apsley House is a wonderful central London gem, it's both home of a Prime Minister and great military leader, a museum of the Napoleonic Wars struggle, and an incredible art gallery showcasing the Duke of Wellington's vast collection - including works previously owned by the King of Spain famously captured in battle from Joseph Bonaparte (brother of Napoleon) by British forces.
Apsley is an English Heritage site, so members get in free - this day of talks is covered by the normal entry fees, so come for some, one, or all! BLACK LIVES
